Curtains by Onder de Linde
Haruka Uemura and Nozoi Kume are the textile duo, called “Onder de Linde”.
They are a special team that adds new functions and expressions to architecture through fabric.
One of the members who designed and installed our bookshelves was Haruka, so through that connection, I also asked them to create curtains for our office.
The first one they made, in 2022, was a small curtain for the window on the entrance door.
When I first opened the office, I had covered the window with English newspapers so people outside could not easily make eye contact with me inside. But with the newspapers, nobody could tell whether I was there or not, so we intentionally left a small gap.
What the two of them did was very interesting. They decided to keep the same function that the newspapers had. So they created a fabric curtain in the same shape, using many colorful fabrics. The small open gap became a mesh section. The entrance started to give off the feeling of our office ― mysterious, but also playful and welcoming.
At the same time, I also asked them to create curtains for the windows. To encourage encounters and conversations with people, I chose bright yellow as the main color. But they also designed the curtains so the mood could be changed anytime by rotating layers of gray and white fabric.
The white mesh parts are especially unique: they are made by weaving and sewing agricultural materials into completely new patterns.
Then last year, I asked them to create winter curtains. They brought many leftover materials from other projects, tested different combinations in the space, and transformed the room with warm shades of green.
And that was not all. Using fabric scraps from other projects, they also created beautiful furoshiki wrapping cloths for me. It is too beautiful to use, so I display them on the wall instead.
In this way, the two of them create completely new experiences through fabric.Every project they do is wonderful. Please check out their work.
