In the Edo period, Uesugi Yozan was a great leader who saved the Yonezawa domain from serious debt. Through many tough& creative reforms, he rebuilt the domain. He is also known for his famous poem:
“If you try, you can succeed. If you do not try, nothing will happen. Failure comes not from what cannot be done, but from not taking action.”
Based on this spirit of “Naseba Naru” (“If you try, you can succeed.”), a new class has started at Yonezawa Yozan University, a public learning program in Yonezawa City, Yamagata.I am producing this class.
In this special course, we learn what “Naseba Naru” means today—grit, self-growth, innovation, and problem solving—in Yonezawa, the place where this idea was born.
Anyone can join, even people who do not live in Yonezawa. In the first class, 30 of 70 participants came from outside the city, from places such as Tokyo, Shizuoka, Nagoya, Shimane, Saga, and Nagasaki. We welcome you to come to Yonezawa and join future classes.
